Treadmill vs. Trail: Which Walking Option Wins?
So I don’t have the funds to hire an expensive personal trainer nor do I have the time to leave my home at 4am for an early morning work out at a nearby 24 hour gym.
Walking is a fantastic low-impact exercise that offers numerous health benefits.
But when it comes to choosing your walking venue, the age-old debate arises: treadmill or trail?
Both have their own unique advantages and disadvantages. Let's explore them:
Treadmill Walking:
Pros:
Convenience: Treadmills offer unparalleled convenience, especially during inclement weather. You can walk at your own pace, anytime, regardless of the conditions outside.
Controlled Environment: Treadmills provide a controlled environment free from distractions like traffic, uneven surfaces, or unpredictable weather.
Safety: Treadmills can be safer for individuals with certain health conditions or those who prefer a controlled environment.
Variety: Many treadmills offer a variety of programs, including incline, decline, and interval training, to keep your workouts challenging and engaging.
Cons:
Monotony: Walking on a treadmill can become monotonous, especially for those who prefer outdoor scenery.
Impact on Joints: The constant impact on the treadmill belt can be harder on your joints compared to walking on softer surfaces like grass or trails.
Lack of Vitamin D: Indoor workouts limit your exposure to sunlight, which is crucial for vitamin D production.
Outdoor Walking:
Pros:
Scenic Views: Enjoying the sights and sounds of nature can make your walks more enjoyable and mentally stimulating.
Fresh Air: Outdoor walking allows you to breathe fresh air and enjoy the benefits of vitamin D from sunlight.
Variable Terrain: Walking outdoors offers a variety of terrains, challenging your muscles and improving balance.
Mental Health Benefits: Studies have shown that spending time in nature can reduce stress, improve mood, and boost overall well-being.
Cons:
Weather Dependence: Outdoor walks are subject to weather conditions, which can limit your ability to exercise consistently.
Safety Concerns: Safety concerns like traffic, uneven surfaces, and potential hazards like wildlife may be present.
Distractions: Outdoor distractions like street noise, people, and other environmental factors can sometimes be disruptive.
The Verdict:
Ultimately, the best choice depends on your individual preferences, health conditions, and lifestyle.
If convenience and weather control are top priorities, a treadmill might be the better option.
If you enjoy the outdoors and prioritize mental well-being, outdoor walking is likely the winner.
I invested on a treadmill over a decade ago and that is my daily go to…I put in 30 minutes daily at least 5 times per week.
Pseudo Pro Tip:
If I have a grocery list of items i need to pick up at the grocery store or super hardware store(Like Lowe’s or The Home Depot), then I will head there, grab and push a cart(I set my smartwatch to begin counting steps) for 30-45 minutes. That is a heck of a way to get your steps in, and pick up whatever goods you need as well.
Consider incorporating both options into your weekly routine to reap the benefits of both indoor and outdoor walking.
Lastly, walking is free.
You don't have to sign up for a membership at a nearby gym.
Seek out a local park…these usually have a walking track around it. Talk a walk down your neighborhood. When the weather is gorgeous(usually late october thru april in south texas, I talk a walk around my neighborhood.
The choice is yours.
I hope these tips aid you on your journey.
To your health,
Tommy
